Filter comparison: Tiffen Glimmerglass 1 vs Freewell CPL/GMIST (1/4)

Not too long after I got my hands on a Fujifilm X100VI camera, I bought a Tiffen Glimmerglass 1 for it; and it has stayed installed pretty much all the time.

Recently I was made aware of a new filter/lens hood combo from Freewell. The filter is a CPL and mist filter combined into one.

A very compelling combo.

In this post I simply want to share some comparison photos taken with the two filters.

I setup my camera on a tripod and use the following settings:

Aperturef/4
Shutter speedAuto (I want to see the exposure differences)
ISO400
Exposure compensation0
Dynamic rangeDR200
White balanceDaylight
Film simulationReala Ace
FocusAF-S, then switched to Manual after focusing on the grey card in the middle

Without any filter

Shutter speed: 1/6

Tiffen Glimmerglass 1

Shutter speed: 1/6

Freewell CPL/GMIST (1/4)

“Zero” degree.
Roughly ninety degree CPL rotation.

For both photos taken with the Freewell filter, the shutter speed was at 1/3.5

Comparisons

Tiffen Glimmerglass 1 VS Freewell CPL/GMIST (1/4) “zero” degree rotation.

  • Less halation. This is to be expected, the Tiffen Glimmerglass is at strength 1, while The Freewell GMIST portion is only at strength 1/4.
  • Using Freewell CPL/GMIST filter, you do lose some light due to the CPL portion. Shutter speed is (1/6) using Glimmerglass vs (1/3.5) when using Freewell CPL/GMIST.

Tiffen Glimmerglass 1 VS Freewell CPL/GMIST (1/4) “ninety” degree rotation.

This one is just to compare Tiffen Glimmerglass vs the CPL part of Freewell CPL/GMIST. Notice the lack of reflection on the scale and tamper mat. Something you can’t do with the Tiffen Glimmerglass alone.

Freewell “zero” degree rotation VS Freewell “ninety” degree rotation

To see the CPL effect more clearly. Again, the difference in the scale and tamper mat is most noticeable.

Just to make this more complete, here are the comparisons between no filter vs Tiffen Glimmerglass and Freewell CPL/GMIST:

No filter vs Tiffen Glimmerglass 1

No filter vs Freewell CPL/GMIST (1/4) “zero” degree.

No filter vs Freewell CPL/GMIST (1/4) “ninety” degree.

Hopefully these simple comparison shots can help those who are curious as how these two filters compare. Cheers.
