Talen coffee dripper, a handmade brewer crafted by an artisan in Thailand.

Earlier this year I had the chance to finally visit Thailand.

For coffee, I only managed to visit Factory Coffee and Talen Coffee. In this post I want to specifically share about my experience with Talen Coffee and the dripper they sell.

Talen coffee dripper from Thailand.

I went to Chatuchak market on my last day. I arrived in the morning and I wanted to drink coffee. I didn’t know much about coffee shops in Chatuchak, so I didn’t have any particular shop in mind. But then I noticed this eye-catching banner and decided to visit.

Black coffee, no sugar? Count me in.

I find the shop to be charming and has a unique character.

The drippers, the mugs, the leather bags, the coffee stand were all said to be handcrafted by the owner.

As advertised, they only serve black pourover coffee. The owner told us that he made almost everything in the shop himself, including the drippers that are also for sale.

I thought that it’d be a great souvenir to bring home to, a handmade dripper from a local artisan in Thailand.

The dripper is similar to Origami, and I find the inside to be gorgeous. It only has 16 points, instead of 20 like Origami, so you can’t really use a kalita wave filter with it. Works great with normal v60 filters though.

Lovely motif on the inside.

I don’t own an Origami dripper, but another difference I notice is that the exit hole is a rather smooth circle; instead of being ridged like the origami. Seemingly smaller hole in diameter too.

Smaller and smooth vs bigger and ridged.

Because of this, I find the drawdown time to be on the longer side. For context, I own and mainly brew with Hario v60, Hario Mugen, Hario Switch, Brewista Target Next Wave Duo. Brew time from Talen dripper is more similar to Mugen.

This leads to an interesting result IMO. Drawdown time is long because the smooth exit chokes the water really well, but there’s a lot of bypass on the sides, especially when the water level is still high.

In my amateurish opinion, the resulting coffee is somewhere in between v60 and Mugen. Coffee tends to be on the lighter and brighter side, but not too thin.

Overall, I’m very happy with this purchase. It’s probably the most good looking dripper that I own 😀 and it makes great coffee.
