One of the common conventions between pour over coffee enthusiasts is that blooming is good for your coffee because it rapidly releases trapped carbon dioxide (CO₂) and fully wets the grounds; this leads to more even extraction, cleaner flavors, and better aroma.
For me personally, when I started brewing pour over coffee at home, I’m not always sure how long I should let the coffee bloom.
If you ever wondered about the same thing, here’s what I personally do to know how long to bloom a new batch of coffee beans: Listen to your coffee.

As mentioned in the beginning, one of the goals of blooming is to let the coffee release the trapped CO₂. When this happens, you can actually hear it. Just get your ear close to the coffee bed and you should be able to hear a “fizzy” sound.
Wait until you can no longer hear it, mark the time, and that should be the base of bloom time for the batch of coffee you’re currently brewing, at your favorite brew water temperature.
Based on my experience so far, blooming using 95°C water, this usually happens between 1 minute 15 seconds, to 1 minute 30 seconds.
Hope this helps 🙂
