First impressions: Zeiss Touit 32mm f1.8 on the Fujifilm X-M1

I recently received an old digital Fujifilm camera from my sister. It’s the Fujifilm X-M1. The camera is in a very good condition, aside from the LCD, which already has vignetting and color cast. It’s still ok for composing, but I can’t rely on it anymore to judge colors.

I decided to buy a new lens for it šŸ™‚ I’ve always been fascinated by the Zeiss Touit 32mm f/1.8 lens, but previously I don’t own a compatible interchangeable lens camera for that lens. When I buy cameras for myself, I deliberately bought fixed lens cameras like the Fujifilm X100 and the X70.

Receiving the camera from my sister was a good excuse to finally buy the lens. A few days ago, I managed to find a secondhand copy online, and I just received it a couple of nights ago.

Both camera and lens are now more than a decade old, but I’d say that this combo can still take amazing shots.

I haven’t had the time to really test the combo out, but here are some straight out of camera photos:

f1.8; 1/60s
f1.8; 1/4000s
f1.8; 1/60s

Some initial comments and thoughts:

  • The center sharpness wide open is great.
  • Micro-contrast is also great.
  • Some people don’t like the bokeh, but I personally love it. I think it has a special charm and character.
  • I wonder If the great micro-contrast combined with the unique bokeh is what people mean by that Zeiss 3D pop.
  • I’ve been spoiled with modern camera features like subject detection auto focus, and in-body image stabilization. I do miss them when using this camera-lens combo, but I like the extra challenge.

I’m looking forward to get take great photos using this camera and lens šŸ˜€
